Nelson Ruritan clubs from Lovingston, Massies Mill and Rockfish Valley marked their annual dictionary giveaway to third-graders in the county last Monday.

The clubs started the tradition years ago and it has been a huge success. A Rockfish parent said he son started college this fall and took his dictionary with him, said Lovingston Ruritan member Gary Sherwood.

The guest speaker last week was the fourth great-grandchild of Thomas Nelson, former governor and namesake for the county. The children were quite impressed with the stories they heard about life back in the 1700s, according to Sherwood.

Also participating was Don Harvey, David and Sandra Hight of the Massies Mill club and Rudy the Bear, the Ruritan mascot.
