For 10 years, the Nelson FFA has been holding bluegrass benefit. The funds that are made at the benefit are used to help offset the costs of the FFA members going to the National Convention in Indianapolis, Indiana. This year the State winning Forestry Judging team competing the team consisting of Ruth Fitzgerald, Jacob Phillips, Kelsy Fitzgerald, and Steven Tyree will be competing against the state winners from possibly all 50 states, Guam, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin islands. The Senior Chapter also has three delegates that will pick up the National Chapter award the chapter won. Those members picking up the award include Melandy Mawyer, Danielle Saunders, and Brandy Campbell. This year the annual benefit we had live entertainment, a silent and live auction, bake sale, and various raffle sales. The live entertainment consisted of four different bluegrass bands performing and along with members from the FFA performing musical numbers that were a big hit. The four different bands that performed this year were In the Tradition, Deep Blue Express, Little Mountain Boys, and James River Cutups. Jesse Carter performed the song “Will the Circle be Unbroken and Stroll over Heaven with you”. The Fitzgerald Band consisting of Noah, Lydia, and Ruth Fitzgerald sang “You are my Sunshine”. The benefit once again had some “yummy food” for sale that included hot dogs, BBQ, chili, Brunswick stew, cakes, cookies, pies, brownies and much more. The raffles sales included a picnic table to be built by the Senior FFA members after the convention. The winner of the table was Mr. Harry Campbell.
This year our 10th annual bluegrass benefit was a huge success. The FFA members would like to give a big thank you to all the bands who gave up their time and money to come and play for us, all of the businesses that donated auction items and money for the national contest trip. We would also like to give a thank you to all of our supporters including the Nelson County School Board, Mr. Scott Belcher, the school administration, and also all the people who helped this benefit run smoothly.
