Rev E. Clarence Perdue Sr. Post 17 of the American Legion hosted a dinner Oct. 18 at its location in Shipman to honor a group of high school students for their dedication and experiences in June at Girls State and Boys State.

The programs, run by American Legion, teach students the ins and outs of government and help students develop leadership skills, according to American Legion’s website.

According to a news release, 12 students from Nelson County High School participated in the programs in June. The group was the largest in the county’s history to attend the programs, the release said.

Students who attended included John Saunders, Ceilidh Macrae, Micah Washington, Khalil Vest-Sims, Schuyler Allen, Lyudmila Avagyan, Tabitha Napier, Kaleen Copson, Samantha Tibbs, Tarah Crowder, Alanna Stone and Haley Cline.
