Gavin Menzies 1421: The Year China Discovered America Really interesting book that poses the idea that China was the first nation to circumnavigate the globe. Lots of maps and nautical evidence to support the hypothesis.
Laurel Schmidt Gardening the Minefield: A Survival Guide for School Administrators A discussion of the various pitfalls and obstacles of managing a school that discuss the opportunities to learn and grow as a leader and learner.
Mathieu Ricard Happiness: A Guide to Developing Life's Most Important Skill I just started this one so it is too early to give a report about what I think, but the title is pretty straight forward. I can say that I had an opportunity to meet the author two years ago. He is a well known scientist and researcher and has spent four decades serving as an interpreter for the Dalai Lama.
John Madea with Becky Bermont Redesigning Leadership As the recently appointed president of the Rhode Island School of Design, Dr. Maeda brings an art and design perspective to the role of administration. The book is easy to read and sprinkles in some of Dr. Maeda's thought provoking tweets. You can follow him on Twitter @johnmaeda.
James A. Michener Texas: A Novel This is a densely written saga about the history of Texas. Sprung from the days of Spanish territory where the search for El Dorado flourishes and dies, settlement and revolution at the hands of a young, new nation to the east, and a booming economy built on larger than life personalities cultivating livestock and oil, Michener's novel attempts to give this nation's second largest state its full measure of honor.
David Brooks The Social Animal: The Hidden Source of Love, Character, and Achievement I am really enjoying this book! It follows the lives of a couple from their youth using sociological, psychological theory and research studies to explain how life happens.
