This week we get to enjoy un délicieux petit déjeuner françaisII  Merci to all the students (and parents) who volunteered to bring croissants, pains au chocolat et chocolat chaud!!

I hope that you learned a lot of French this year and, especially, had a little fun.  Learning a new language is very difficult.  Try to keep it up this summer by listening to French music or, maybe, watching some French movies (with English subtitles).  Most of all, have a wonderful and safe summer break!!

Vive les vacances!!

Le 29 mai - 1er juin - Les verbes en "er" - Petite Interro

Le 4-8 juin - aimer + infinitif

posted Jun 6, 2015, 4:25 AM by eric_frere@needham.k12.ma.us   [ updated Jun 3, 2018, 2:43 AM ]

This week, we will learn about using the verbs aimer, adorer and détester with the infinitive of another verb.

In English, when we want to say whether we like or don't like to do something, we say something like:

He likes to work.

or

She hates to arrive on time.

Notice that we conjugate the first verb (like) but not the second verb (to work or to arrive).  The second verb is in the infinitive form.  This is the same in French:

Il aime travailler.

or

Elle déteste arriver à l'heure.

The negative form is "around" the first verb because that is what you don't like to do:

Il n'aime pas travailler.

or

Elle ne déteste pas arriver à l'heure.

You can practice this on page 25 of the homelearning packet.

Le 21-25 mai - Vocabulaire 2 et les verbes reguliers en "er"

posted May 23, 2014, 4:54 AM by eric_frere@needham.k12.ma.us   [ updated May 20, 2018, 6:12 AM ]

So we are now finishing up the new vocabulary from chapter 3.  We will have la petite interro this week!!  Check out the various online vocabulary review sites listed in the Online Practice section of the website.

After the quiz, we will learn how to conjugate the most common set of regular verbs in French: "ER" verbs.  Since I've already talked to you about this, it should be a little easier to get.  These verbs are called "regular" because they all follow the same regular pattern.  Their infinitives end in "ER".  Examples or regular "ER" verbs include: parler, écouter and habiter.

To conjugate a regular "ER" verb, you remove the "ER" - the rest is called the stem.  So for parler, parl is the stem. You then add the ending to the stem depending on the subject (the person, place or thing that performs the action):

Person   Singular             Plural
1st          Je parle             Nous parlons
2nd         Tu parles           Vous parlez
3rd          Il/elle/on parle   Ils/elles parlent

Note that, although the endings for je, tu, il/elle/on, ils/elles are spelled differently, they are not pronounced. The good thing is that once you know how to conjugate one regular ER verb, you can conjugate them all!!

In order to practice the use of the conjugation of ER verbs, check out the Online Practice section and compete worksheet, page 22 and podcast, activité 6 on page A17 of the Homelearning Packet.
