All About Me

My first teaching position was a first grade position at Park View Elementary in Payson, Utah.  I had just graduated from Brigham Young University and my lifelong dream of becoming a teacher was about to begin.  I  am happy to say that I love teaching as much today as I did in August of 1983.

In my more than thirty years of teaching I have been privileged to teach first grade at Park View, first grade at Redbird Elementary in Mesa, Arizona, Kindergarten in Santaquin Elementary in Sanataquin, Utah, first grade at Taylor Elementary in Payson, Utah, Kindergarten at Grant Elementary in Springville, Utah, first grade, and currently kindergarten at Westside Elementary, in Springville.

Beside getting my Early Childhood Education degree from BYU, I have received my ESL endorsement and I have been trained in Reading Recovery.  This training has significantly increased my ability to teach reading.

My philosophy of education is that every child can learn.  We need to start from what is already known and link that knowledge to new knowledge, using examples and lessons that are clear and memorable.  The English language is tricky to those new to the literacy process.  What sound does /a/ really make?   We hear different sounds of /a/ in apple, apron, about and father.  We can spell the long sound of /a/ in many ways as well, eight, late, hay, hey, tail, etc.  So my goal in teaching is to make learning as fun, easy and memorable as possible, in a friendly, caring environment where children take responsibility  for their learning and parents are given opportunities to support their child's success.
