The August donations to our R.O.P.E. recipients totaled $2325.  Food for the Poor our Skip a Meal recipient received $465.  Santa Clara County Friends Outside and St. Joseph Indian School each received $930.  The committee has selected Jonestown Family Center in Coahoma County, Mississippi (the senior project of Maddie Kirkland, a Holy Spirit parishioner) as our September recipient.  St. Catherine’s Church in Morgan Hill is our Skip a Meal recipient for the month.

Coahoma County has the 6th highest obesity rate in the state of Mississippi and 13th highest in the nation. The medium household income in 2009 was $24,815 as compared to the national poverty guideline of $29,530. The county is also home to the Jonestown Family Center, a nonprofit organization founded by the Sisters of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary. This summer with the few resources they have, the Jonestown Family Center began to tackle the plight of obesity with a month long program for children and teens, at which Maddie volunteered. The center is currently hosting a 6 week program for adults on healthy eating and exercising strategies.  Through this project Maddie hopes to help fund the continuation of these exercise and nutrition programs. “This community is in great need and with the aid of Holy Spirit Parish Community the cycle of obesity that exists in Jonestown can be broken.”  Watch for more information from Maddie.

St. Catherine’s Church in Morgan Hill has a food program they call Reach Out.   Much like our FISH program, they provide non perishable food to local residents Monday through Friday.  Twenty percent of the total September donations will go to help feed the poor and hungry in their area.
