West Elementary is a public preK-6 school serving a student population of approximately 155. It isstaffed by 23 certified and non certified staff committed to excellence in education through up-to-date teaching strategies, thorough curriculum review, and a positive discipline program. The school's curriculum and instruction is aligned with the Minnesota Academic Standards.
West Elementary has made every effort to maintain effective class sizes for an optimal learning environment. The curriculum reflects sensitivity to cultural and gender diversity, as well as the remediation or enrichment needs of students. All students participate in physical education, music and computer literacy programs, which are taught by licensed specialists. Parents of kindergarten students may participate in either an all-day/every-day fee-based program or a three-day per week program. West Adventure Center provides Early Childhood services for the district three and four year olds five full days each week. West Elementary also provides an after-school program for students in grades K-6.
Special education services are provided for specific learning disabilities, speech/language therapy, emotional behavior disorders, occupational/physical therapy, mild/moderate/severe mental impairments, and early childhood special education. Independent School District #2527 is a member of the Area Special Education Cooperative located in East Grand Forks, MN.
