Landscape Ecology

Course Objectives:

We will explore the principles of landscape ecology as a framework for landscape research, analysis and management. This course will:

  • Synthesize the dominant themes of landscape ecology

  • Familiarize students with current research trends in the field

  • Explore applications from the landscape approach

The course was designed for Graduate students with an interest in natural resources, ecology, conservation biology, geography, land use planning, and other fields.

What is Landscape Ecology?

  • Landscape ecology recognizes that many systems - both natural and human - cannot be fully understood outside of their geographic context.

  • Landscape ecology integrates human and natural systems thinking.

  • Fundamental concepts of landscape ecology serve as foundations for decision-making and problem solving in applied fields such as global food security, conservation biology, land-use management, and urban planning and development.
