Catholic Health Services

The health service program delivery within the church run health faclities is an ongoing activities inline with four National Public Health Strategic Directios that have been implemented in our ten Church runs health facilities to their catchment population and some population from nearby government health facilities.
The Catholc Health Service of Archdiocese of Rabaul runs and manages a total of ten health facilities from the total of 31.The Catholic Health Service operates one (1) Hospital at Vunapope in Kokopo District.Six (6) health facilities in Pomio District are: Aona, Guma, Marunga, Muela, Nutuve and Uvol and three (3) facilites in Gazelle District are, Napapar, Paparatava and Raunsepna.
 
The Catholic Health Services over the ten (10) years or more have been operating with 186 approved staff ceiling of the following categories;medical officers health extension officers, nursing officers , community health workers, paramedical (Labourary Teachnicians,Assistant, X-ray Assistant,Dental Therapist) and administrative positions (CHS,Hospital Administrator, Accountants and Clerks),by the government through Churuh Medical Councils.Although the Catholic health Services have the approved  staff ceiling of 186 more staff are been employed by the differnt Catholic Health Facility to accommodate the growing number of population in its repective facilities.Those extra staff are paid by the individual facility that employs them.Most of these staff are auxilliaries and some are professionals.

The health service within the Archdiocese of Rabaul main funding comes in grants the salary and operational from the govetnment through the Church Medical Council. While health facilities other internal revenues from user fee. Health facilities were also given funding from LLG grant, HSIPand CMC supplementary budget.
 
Clinical Services involved out-patient, in-patient, mobile and outreach services.All ten catholic church runs health facilities delivered services to the mentiioned point of contacts.From January to December each health facility have treated different conditions both at the outpatient and inpatient.
Health Information - The new National Health Information reporting forms are being put in practice by the  catholic health facility and the outcome is very slow because the aid post are slow in submitting their reports.
 
Public Health Strategic Direction1-Family Health Service (Immunization) at each health facility they carry out routine immunization program carried out on monthly basis while others are done on alternate month,that is because of the number of human resource that each heath facility have.
Supplementary Immunization Activities (SIA) -the funding of this program came from GAWI through the National Department of Health ,and the program started in the second quater of theyear 2008 .Due to bad weather the inland part of Pomio completed the program this year.
 
Public Health Strategic Directon 2 Disease Control (Malaria).
Bed Nets Distribution . the province was introduced to bed net strategy in the last 4 years the inccidence of malaria is still high since January to December 2009 the ten Catholic Health Facilities have treated 33,989 cases of malaria and reported 14 deaths.
 
Public Health Strategic Direction 3- Family Health Service (Safe Motherwood)
The ANC coverage in all facilities has a good coverage but the majority of mothers still dieliver at home. While on family planning from January to December 5,290couples were given counseling on ovulation methods 16,147couples as receptors. At the same time government aid post under catholic health supervision have given 32 contraception's to women and men alike.
 
Public Health Strategic Direction 4-Disease Control (HIV, AIDS, TB )
The agency runs health facilities have  closely working relationship with ENBSHIP and PAC,from the ten catholic health facilities one has been accredited as regional VCTcentre while the other two have established VCTcentres.
 
Archdiocese of Rabaul has ten health facilities few of those facilities were built before World War 2 while others were built before independent. Minor maintenence has been done for some buildings from time to time .The major work has been done at Napapar Health Centre and Vunapope Hospital.
40%of these facilities can be access only on foot, 30% by boat, and 30% by car. The National Radio  Net work is the main communication used, while 30%of these facilities have access to telephone service.
