Writing Advice

I put together this page in 2013; most of the information on it has now been superseded by my current draft of the Style Guide for the New College AOC in History (file attached below).

Good guides for history-paper writing include:
  • Kate Turabian, A Manual for Writers of Research Papers, Theses, and Dissertations (7th ed., 2007)
  • Strunk and White, The Elements of Style (many editions, but see also "Grammar Girl," below)
  • Mary Rampolla, A Pocket Guide to Writing in History (4th ed., 2004)
  • Patrick Rael, Reading, Writing, and Researching for History: A Guide for College Students (Bowdoin College, 2004)
  • and, for citation, The Chicago Manual of Style (16th ed., 2011)
These and other writing guides are all available for use in the New College Writing Resource Center (WRC).

I have also put together a number of handouts on the writing process:
Finally, here are a few good online resources:

The NCF Writing Resource Center (limited to those with NCF Portal access)
The Chicago Manual of Style (their Quick Guide is especially recommended)
Grammar Girl's Quick and Dirty Tips
Grammar Girl on Strunk and White (a helpful discussion of rules vs. guidelines)
