March 21

Wow what weird weather last week. Snow in March!

Well this week the 2nd and 3rd grade students are finishing up a new project called "Shape City". They used simple shapes to be the roofs of buildings and used rulers to draw the rest of the buildings. The technique should have created overlapping and a crowded cityscape. We also drew different shapes to be the windows and lastly threw a little color on top the roofs using markers. They are very interesting drawings.

The 4th and 5th grade students are finishing up drawing profiles on their coin projects. They had the choice of Washington (quarter) or Lincoln (penny). Once drawn they also had to add value to the drawings to make the coins look more realistic. The next project will involve some paper weaving.

Kindergarten and 1st grade students are creating rainbow 4 leaf clovers. They are learning the correct order of the rainbow and using crayons to color it around a clover that they cut out and glue down. I am "lucky" to have such tatlented young artists.

Things are getting pretty interesting in the art room. March is youth art month and I will be hanging up a showcase at Judd and will also be hanging up a display at the BOE offices. Great for our artists to get some of the recognition they deserve.

The kindergarten and first grade students are working on creating new animals by combining together parts of three real animals. Students are drawing the head of one animal, the body of a second animal and the tail of a third animal. They are also expected to draw a background to create a full drawing. They are really cool!

The second and third grade students are using the art elements and principles that they have learned about to create a unique pencil design. The creativity in these designs has been impressive.

The fourth and fifth grade students have started a project where they have learned how to draw a profile. Students are in the process of drawing a coin. They could choose from the quarter or penny and are trying to draw Washington or Lincoln in profile. We will also be adding value (lights and darks) to completed coins to make them look three dimensional. So techniqually, they are making money!

Kindergarten and 1st grade students created an art project that tied into the important celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Students traced a peace symbol on the paper and colored many different colors around the symbol in many creative ways. The completed projects were awesome.

2nd and 3rd grade students have been mad art scientists. We drew test tubes, beakers and glass cylinders on a piece of paper and then mixed primary (Red,blue, yellow) colored watercolor paints inside them to create the secondary colors (Orange, purple, green). The next class we created a bubble like background using a variety of circles, then we cut out and glued the test tubes and beakers to finish off our successful art experiments.

4th and 5th grade students have finished the sarcophagus drawings and are moving on to copying the drawings onto lunch bags that will then be painted in and become a 3D version. The students have been very interested in the Egyptian project and some have even taken my advise to visit the Metropolitan Museum of Art in NYC to see the great Egyptian exhibit that is there.

Welcome back to school and Happy New Year!

Kindergarten and 1st grade students are creating an art project that reflects the New Year's celebration that always takes place in Times Square in New York. Students created the projects so that their Times Square ball will move up and of course down and focused on backgrounds  as part of the project.

2nd and 3rd grade students focused on the art element of line and the art principle of movement to create a project that showed a fireworks display. We used black paper and construction paper crayons so it seemed to glow.

4th and 5th grade students are continuing work on their Egyptian Sarcophagus project. Some classes are almost done with the drawing and are moving on to the second part of the project that will be a painted 3D version of their sarcophagus.

Kindergarten and 1st grade art students worked this week on creating a cut paper fire truck project. We used simple shapes and worked on making sure our projects including many details and backgrounds. The students really enjoyed creating these projects about heroes from our community.

2nd and 3rd grade art students began work this week on a Greek vase project. We looked at many examples of Greek vases on the smart board to use as inspiration. Students started by creating sketches of many different shaped vases and then they used lines and shapes to create designs on them. We are going to draw these vase designs be on scratch art paper and add a Greek style column also.

4th and 5th grade art students have finished the boom box project and are now moving on to a new project. Next week we will be starting a project that involves the Egyptian art and culture.

4th and 5th grade art students are really progressing in the symmetrical radial design boom boxes. The first two classes began work on the boom box part of the project and I even brought in one of the old antiques for them to use as reference.

2nd and 3rd grade students have started a drawing of a treehouse. We are working on using many details and backgrounds to make our drawings more realistic.

Kindergarten and 1st grade students created a pattern turkey in art this week. We cut and glued together the turkey face and then used pattern to color in the feathers around the outside of the turkey. Gooble gooble!

A new picture has been added to the gallery slide show. It's a picture of what I dressed up like for Halloween. Magritte is my favorite artist and so I dressed up like his painting called "Son of Man". Enjoy!

4th and 5th grade students are starting a new project that is "old school"! Students are learning about and creating symmetrical radial designs on two circles. The designs use three of the elements of art; line, shape and color. These creative and awesome designs are then going to be added to an "old school" boom box that each students will design as the speakers. The students are very excited and although the project is early, it's looking good.

Kindergarten and 1st grade students are creating some interesting gum ball machines this week. Students cut out and design the machine including the functioning gum ball door and then glue down balled up tissue paper to be the gum balls. Some pictures of this project have been added to the gallery slide show.

2nd and 3rd grade students have started a new project inspired by a painting called "Sunflowers" done by Vincent Van Gogh. We started out the project using rulers to make a grid that was then colored in creating  a checkerboard pattern. We will soon be adding our own sunflowers to the project in a unique 3D way. Stay tuned for pics in the gallery.

Kindergarten and 1st grade students used some simple folding and cutting skills as well as drawing and coloring skills to make some awesome fall owls. You can see some of the projects that are hung outside the art room in the gallery section. Enjoy!

So my art room website went live yesterday, and I'm very excited about being able to keep parents and students up to date on the great things getting made by all our creative students. I will continue to add photos throughout the year to the gallery slide show so please enjoy that newly added feature. Happy weekend everybody!
