Summer reading promotes reading for pleasure, helps students develop into lifelong readers, and maintains students’ reading skills (Cornish, 2003).  It is estimated that school summer breaks will cause the average student to lose up to one month of instruction.  Reading during the summer provides students with the opportunity to practice and maintain the reading skills and strategies they have been taught all year.
