Senior Naval Science Instructor

LCDR Justin Whitt USN (Ret)

A native of Georgetown, Texas; Commander Whitt enlisted in the Navy in March 1988. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Fire Administration from Hampton University in May 1997 and was commissioned in October 1998 following graduation from Officer Candidate School in Pensacola, Florida.

            At sea Commander Whitt served as a Damage Control technician aboard USS WISCONSIN (BB 64), USS WASP (LHD 1), USS MISSISSIPPI (CGN 40), USS SCOTT (DDG 995), and USS GEORGE WASHINGTON (CVN 73).  Following training at Surface Warfare Officers Schools in Newport, Rhode Island he served as Auxiliaries and Electrical Officer in USS MITSCHER (DDG 57), Engineer Officer in USS SCOUT (MCM 8), Engineer Officer in USS BULKELEY (DDG 84), and as Diesel and Gas Turbine Propulsion Assessor and PC class lead at Engineering Assessment Atlantic.

Ashore Commander Whitt served at Naval Air Station Sigonella, Sicily as an aircrew rescue specialist in the aircraft crash and rescue department, Assistant Professor of Naval Science for Surface Warfare at the University of Texas at Austin, and Officer Instructor and Weapons Division Officer at the AEGIS Training and Readiness Center Dahlgren, Virginia.

Commander Whitt earned a Master of Education degree in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of Texas at Austin Graduate School in 2006. Personal awards include the Meritorious Service Medal, the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (three awards) and the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (three awards) in addition to various unit, campaign, and service awards.   

            Commander Whitt retired from the U.S. Navy in September 2012 after 24 years of service. He has served as the Senior Naval Science Instructor at Gloucester High School since July 2013. Commander Whitt is married to the former Evelyn “Lyn” Tayman of Gloucester Point, Virginia. They have two children, Stephanie Lynn and Justin Robert.
