The final area of focus for the high school level was to complete a Comprehensive Local Literacy Plan. This plan consists of Reading, Writing, and Transitions components. Teams were formed to work on each component and to determine areas of weakness, which then could be improved.
Another focus at the high school was to ensure that all teachers have a complete understanding of how literacy can benefit teachers and students. To do so, the target group completed nine professional development courses. These teachers learned how to best meet the literacy needs of English Language Learners (ELLs) as well as Special Education students. Additionally, they were trained on how to analyze data to help individual students be successful.
High School GoalsThe overall focus for the high school level was to improve literacy in all content area courses. To do so, we focused on the instruction and implementation of Reading Apprenticeship for all teachers. A summer training course was offered for new hires as well as those who needed a refresher on new and updated strategies. Additionally, our Literacy Coach serves as a resource for all content area teachers. She provides helpful literacy strategies, offers literacy support, and even co-teaches with content area teachers.
