BIRTH TO 5

Birth to Five Goals

The most important component of this section of the grant was the creation and implementation of our own Pre-Kindergarten classroom: Keystone Kids.  This class is staffed with two Head Start teachers and services 20 children who have the greatest financial need.  We are fortunate to share that not only are we entering year three with the Keystone Kids Program, but we are also adding a second Head Start Pre-Kindergarten program to our district.  This will allow 40 eligible children to receive the services needed to be successful in Kindergarten.

To evaluate the quality of the Keystone Kids program/Early Intervention Pre-Kindergarten, we utilize the Early Childhood Environmental Rating Scale (ECERS).  This ensures that all students in our Pre-Kindergarten programs are equipped with everything they need to be successful.  Additionally, we utilize the Home Visit Environmental Rating   Inventory (HVERI) for Northampton County Early Intervention.  This is utilized to assess the environment of the home, not the family.

And finally, a major goal for this age group was to form an open line of communication between the Northampton Area School District and the local day care/nursery school facilities.  To do this, the Early Childhood Task Force was created.  This group meets four times per year and discusses hot topics regarding academic readiness and socialization skills necessary for children to transition into Kindergarten.
