Sacred Heart has had a long history of environmental stewardship. We've always taken our responsibility to the Mother Earth seriously. Last year we decide to become Ontario EcoSchool Certified. Ontario EcoSchools is an environmental education and certification program for grades K-12 that helps school communities develop both ecological literacy and environmental practices to become environmentally responsible citizens and reduce the environmental footprint of schools.

How our school became certified

Our school formed an EcoTeam which reviewed our school's energy and waste practices. We used this information to create and implement an action plan for improvement. Once we put our plan into place, the EcoTeam reviewed our hard work every three months. The process is very detailed, and each step is documented by Ontario EcoSchools. EcoSchools certification provides a rigorous province-wide set of criteria to award points to each school. These points help determine which level of certification our school receives. Upon certification, our school received an EcoSchools plaque and a seal for every year of certification. To become certified, a school must demonstrate achievement in at least four key areas:

  • energy conservation

  • waste minimization

  • ecological literacy

  • school ground greening

In our first year, we became Silver Certified, coming within a hair of Gold Certified. In our second year we reached the Gold Standard! This year we're hoping to repeat this accomplishment. Next time you're in the school, check out some our eco-intiatives.

Our school EcoTeam continues to lead the way in environmental sustainability. Take some time to read about some of our ideas and programs. We will be updating this site routinely with updates on what's going on in our school, upcoming events, and new information that will be useful for everyone looking to reduce their footprint.
