Hello,
My name is Michael Coker, welcome to the Aviation, Engineering and Robotics or A.E.R Pre-Academy here at Lakeland Highlands Middle School.

Mission Statement

The A.E.R Pre-Academy here at Lakeland Highlands Middle seeks to create a challenging learning environment that encourages high expectations for success for all of our students with the understanding that diversity of gender, physical or mental ability, culture, and background is a strength to be respected.  This academy will provide hands-on learning experiences that focus on the Engineering Process from design to creation. Students will be given the opportunity to solve technological problems using a variety of tools, materials, processes, and systems while gaining an understanding of the effects technology has on our everyday lives. A primary goal is for students to continue their STEM education at the next levels while preparing for a technology related career.  This preparation will include earning Industry Certifications by the end of their 3rd year.

Class Progression offered in this academy include:
  • Year 1 - Exploration of Production Technology & Career Planning - 1 Year, Course #8600042
  • Year 2 - Exploration of Aerospace Technology - 1st Semester, Course #8600050
  • Year 2 - Exploration of Transportation Technology - 2nd Semester, Course # 8600240
  • Year 3 - Foundations of Robotics - 1 Year Course #9410110H (Honors High School Credit)

Production Technology - The purpose of this course is to give students an opportunity to explore the area of production technology and its associated careers. Students will be given the opportunity to solve technological problems using a variety of tools, materials and systems while gaining an understanding of the effects of production technology on our everyday lives. We will study Simple Machines, Bridge Design and Transportation. Some of the Projects or Problem Solvers we may work on include building Straw Towers and Balloon and Mousetrap Powered Cars. We will be working extensivelywith LEGO Engineering kits.

Aerospace Technology  and Transportation Technology- The Purpose of these courses is to give students an opportunity to explore the areas of aerospace and transportation technology and their associated careers. Students will be given the opportunity to solve technological problems using a variety of tools, materials, processes and systems while gaining an understanding of the effects of aerospace and transportation technology on our everyday lives. The students also have the opportunity to use very realistic virtual flight simulators. Some of the Projects or Problem Solvers we may work on include designing and building Hot Air Balloons, Rubber Band Launched Gliders, Soda Bottle Rockets and the highlight of the semester, CO2 Powered Dragsters.

Robotics
- Introduces students to real-world engineering challenges by building and programming LEGO and VEX based robots to complete various tasks. This course provides students with a foundation in content and skills associated with robotics and automation, including artificial intelligence, electronics, physics, and principles of engineering.

Students in Robotics will:
  • Design, build, test and program robots using LEGO MINDSTORMS® and VEX IQ technology
  • Apply real-world math and science concepts
  • Begin learning the skills needed to pass the Autodesk Inventor Certification Exam
  • Learn critical thinking, team-building and presentation skills
  • Participate in tournaments and celebrations
