The number of people on the council's housing waiting list has jumped by 14 per cent in the last three years, new figures have revealed.

Registrations with Edindex, the council's housing register, increased from 23,392 in November 2005 to 26,652 this year.

Yesterday, the Evening News revealed more than 400,000 bids have been made for just 2700 council homes in the last year as the city's affordable housing crisis worsens.

In one case, 1003 people joined the running for one two-bedroom Portobello home.

Councillor Paul Edie, the city's housing leader, said "The need for more affordable housing in Edinburgh keeps growing, while the investment goes to areas with little or no need.

"We know what we need to do, but without support from the Scottish Government, Edinburgh's affordable housing crisis will continue to worsen."
