About your teacher...

My name is Tina Harbison, but if you know me as Ms. Balsley, it’s okay to call me that. I got married during spring break in 2014. A year later, my amazing daughter joined our family over spring break. My son joined the mix in 2017. I love watching them learn new things.

I'm excited to be the 7th grade Language Arts teacher teacher at CPMS! I love learning, inspiring others to learn, staying active, and going on adventures. I'm a native San Diegan, graduating from El Cajon Valley High School and then attending UCSD. While going to school at UCSD I coached water polo for El Cajon Valley High School and for Sunrise Aquatics. I graduated from UCSD with a BA in Linguistics, and then I spent the following semester playing water polo for Grossmont College, while taking additional classes that interested me. After the semester was over I moved to LA, where I earned my MA in Education and teaching credential from Pepperdine University Graduate School of Education and Psychology.

After earning my degrees, I traveled. I spent several months exploring Greece, specifically the island of Crete, before I moved to Palm Springs to be an English Language teacher at Palm Springs High School. After spending some time in the desert I decided to move back to San Diego, but not before I did a little more traveling. I backpacked through Europe and then came back home to settle down in San Diego.

I have many talents and interests. I taught at FIDM, was a substitute teacher, and was also a P.E. assistant for CPMS before becoming the ELA teacher. The California Women's Baseball League drafted me to the San Diego Legends team as its starting first baseman for the 2011 season, and we ended up winning the CWBL Southern Division Championship. I also have a passion for photography, having worked as a sports photographer as well as an event and portrait photographer.

I want to make the most of my life and I encourage others to stop standing on the sidelines and take an active role in their lives as well. It delights me to be able to share my knowledge and help others to learn and grow into educated and respectable members of society. I am a lover of knowledge, and I enjoy learning new things. I strive to become the teacher that instills the desire to learn within my students.
