Below is a recap of what the 3rd graders have been up to...

Writing:

The 3rd graders have working through the writing process to publish their first round of personal narratives. They have been using checklists and writing tools to help them fix up their writing to make it even better! The motto in our class is, "When you're done, you've just begun!" It's so exciting for the kids to start typing stories using Google Docs, but they are doing a nice job really stopping to think about where they could add more details to help the reader experience the story from start to finish.

Reading:

The focus lessons have been centered around how GOOD READERS UNDERSTAND A STORY BY....

- SUMMARIZING what they are reading so far

- RETELLING the most important parts

- SYNTHESIZING to fill others in on important information from earlier in the text

- STOPPING AND JOTTING parts that they love

In small groups they have been working on reviewing nouns as well as understanding how adding a prefix or suffix changes the meaning of the root word. They have also been working on using nonfiction text to take notes.

Math:

In math we completed Topic 1, which was focused on understanding multiplication and division (with a focus on joining equal groups and equal shares). Topic 2 builds on this by looking at specific multiplication patterns, specifically multiplying by 0, 1, 2, 5, 9, and 10 as factors.

Sharing the Planet:

The kids have been investigating different animals while practicing their Google search skills. They have been learning that researchers have to look for the same information in multiple places to check if a source is accurate or not. This is hard work! Next, they will be researching a habitat where their animal would not normally be found. Then, they have to imagine their animal moves to this new habitat and they have to figure out what physical and behavioral adaptations would their animal need to develop over time in order to survive. This is always a fun project combining information and creativity!
