I Love to Read Month

What a busy month it has been in 3rd grade! I Love to Read Month was another success! We had a fantastic turn out for the the vocabulary parade. It was fun to see all of the creative ways to show words. Below is a recap of what the children have been up to...

Writing:

The 3rd graders are working on publishing their realistic fiction pieces. They have been working through the writing process to plan, draft, revise and edit. It can be exhausting work, but they have been showing more focus and stamina than ever before. Ask your child about his or her story. They have some fantastic characters and plot development. Most students have even shown some changes within their characters as their stories unfold. This is so exciting to see!

Reading:

The kids have been reading series books at their just right levels. Throughout this unit we have been focused on following the main characters as well as the secondary characters through the first 3 books in the series. As they work through the books they are taking all of their thinking about each character and organizing their sticky notes so they can show evidence of a character’s growth or change over time. Their ability to hold discussions about books has come so far this year!

Math:

In math we are just finishing up topic 6, which focuses on relating area to multiplication. Some students rely on grid paper to find the area, some count each unit square, while some are able to see how to break shapes apart and use the distributive property to find the total. Remember, you can always visit pearsonrealize.com and sign in with your child to see the specific lessons and examples that could assist you with homework!

Where We Are in Place and Time:

The kids have been enjoying working with maps and globes throughout this unit. They have been getting to know about the regions of the United States and they are finishing up the unit with an independent inquiry project, which will be completed the week after vacation.
