Reading & Writing Specialist -Working to Support Your Child
About Me:

Hello, my name is Karen Broth. I am a Reading Specialist at Penacook Elementary School.  I have been teaching reading for more than 15 years.  I am so very lucky --because teaching children to read is the best job in the world!

When not at school, I can be found walking in the woods with my silly dogs, Jethro and Daffodil.  Hiking with my husband, Mark.  Curled up with a great book and a nice cup of tea. Or, visiting my sons.  Tyler is living and working in Boston. Zachary is studying Engineering at Queen's University in Ontario.

I was born and raised in Boston and I still visit regularly.  I attended Northeastern University and received a degree in Marketing and International Business.  I later fulfilled a lifelong dream, returned to school at Boston University and received my masters degree in Elementary Education. Finally, I finished my formal education with a Reading & Writing Specialist certification from Plymouth State College.
       But the learning never ends!

As you may already know, Penacook Elementary is now a school-wide Title I school.  What does that mean?  Well, we have been able to hire a Social Worker, Dianne Walsh-Green.  If you haven't had the opportunity to meet her or if you feel you would like to speak to her, please call the school to set up an appointment.  She is fabulous.

As a school-wide school all children are eligible for reading and/or math intervention as needed.  All families will have the opportunity to attend our amazing evening events, such as Reptiles on the Move.

And, we will now be offering workshops for parents focusing on the mental and social/emotional health of children.  There will be a presentation for grandparents and other relatives raising a child in lieu of the parents.  A six week parenting class with be held in the second half of the year.  Details on all of this will be sent home in the near future.

I will continue to provide individual and small group reading support to any students who would benefit.
I will also be working hard to design and provide a whole new model for our after school program.
Stand by- you will hear more from me later.

If I can be of any assistance, please call me at 753-4891 or email me at

If your child(children) read over the summer, or you read to them, please send in your reading log. We do ask that an adult sign the log. We have told the kids to put them in a blue mailbox at 4 corners, where all four hallways meet.

The prizes include:

For all participants-
* popsicles and recess with the principal
* a no homework pass from their classroom teacher

For two lucky raffle winners-
* a razor scooter with a helmet, of course
* free gym time with the gym teacher and 5 friends

The deadline is Friday, September 9.
