IT’S WHAT’S INSIDE THAT COUNTS

HOW TO HELP OUR KIDS BUILD INTERNAL TOOLS AND CONNECT WITH RESOURCES  TO HELP FILL THEIR "TOOL BOX."

Presenter:Chris Averill, Director of Juvenile Services, Merrimack County. Licensed as a Substance Abuse Counselor and  for Clinical Supervision with a MA in Counseling, Chris has been helping families for more than 40 years.

  • Talking to your kids about substances: helping them realize what the media and other sources are trying to convince them of and why.

    • 8 Billion dollars a year is spent to convince kids that using drugs will make them more popular and help them get more friends, money etc.

  • Why does the media TARGET OUR KIDS?DEVELOPMENTAL and STRESS FACTORS

    • What makes the brain of a child so easy to impact?

    • What do movies, videogames and music do to reinforce these messages? Why do we as a society allow our kids to be victimized by the media blitz and overkill?

  • Tools parents can use to help kids recognize the hype and lies and help them to see through them.

    • How our actions either reinforce the hype or counter it. What have we introduced our kids to to help them to reduce stress and achieve natural highs?

    • How do we help our kids internalize these messages so they can use them later? It is not enough to know it or even teach it: we have to live it and help our kids to internalize it so they call on it for a lifetime.
