Leilehua High School Band

Dear Band Parents,

I wanted to take a moment to introduce myself to you all; my name is Jenna Eggering and I have been hired as the new Band Director at Leilehua High School. As you can imagine, it has been a whirlwind couple of weeks for me, getting to know your students, the school, and the program itself. I have had wonderful help from the Band Boosters, Mr. Roque and Mr. Matsuda in assisting with the marching band, and the band leadership students. They all have answered many of my questions--some several times over--and have been wonderful in working with me to help me learn the ins and outs of the Leilehua Band program.

A little about my background: I graduated the University of Hawai’i in 2008, taught band and choir at Waimea High on Kaua’i, subbed in the DOE, assisted various smaller music programs, and the last two years I have been teaching at Kapolei High where I assisted with the marching and concert bands after school. I am thrilled for this opportunity to work with your students both on and off the field. This year is going to be an exciting one for us all!

Going forward, I wanted to make you all aware of some rehearsal time changes for marching band--some are only slight. After reviewing the current schedule I wanted to make some adjustments to let your student(s) have more time for homework, family, friends, rest, and proper conditioning for when they are in head-to-toe uniforms, with their adrenaline rushing, and giving their all at tournaments. I consulted with the staff and leadership before making this move and many feel it is a positive change. Many of our students are in AP classes with a large homework load or can’t stay at school as late on both Friday or Saturday nights, etc. I believe firmly in balance for teenagers, and this new schedule allows us the same rehearsal hours, 10, just spread over differently during the week. The idea of “Work Hard, Play Hard” can be achieved with efficient rehearsals, hardwork, and dedication. This schedule should also allow for a more consistent rehearsal schedule for everyone to plan around.

Monday: 5-8pm (30 min earlier)

Wednesday: 5-8pm (30 min earlier)

Friday: 3-4 (If a football game night--only 4 left as of 8/15--section leaders will call a sectional earlier in the week and inform their section with enough notice)

Saturday: 10-1 (No practice if football game that night, and only 2 left as of 8/15)

I appreciate everyone’s support for this revised schedule as it serves in the best interest of the students achieving balance during their busy high school careers. Should you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to email me back at Email is always the quickest and easiest way to get a hold of me and if you would like me to call you, feel free to add your phone number and I would be happy to! I look forward to meeting you all over the course of the year!

Please sign and return the attached form acknowledging receipt of this letter and the new rehearsal schedule beginning the week of 8/21/17.
