Growing caring, curious and creative learners

"The centre’s vision, values and philosophy are clearly evident in practice and underpin high quality programme implementation. Planning is based on children’s analysed learning stories that identify emerging interests, strengths and, at times, needs. Aspects of literacy and numeracy are well integrated into the programme" reports the Education Review Office.

Priorities for children's learning
The teaching teams have reviewed the needs of the community and the skills that will help children to 'grow up as competent and confident learners and communicators, healthy in mind, body and spirit, secure in their sense of belonging and in the knowledge that they make a valued contribution to society' (Ministry of Education, 1996)

We define our priorities for children's learning as:
  • Empowered - healthy, proud of who they are, confident, know their strengths and share them with others
  • Respectful - toward other people, even those who are different from themselves, respectful of the places and things around them, and                             respect the environment
  • Relationships - develop secure social and emotional skills for initiating and maintaining relationships
  • Communication - develop communication skills for a range of purposes
  • Independence - develop strategies for self-care and independent problem solving
  • Intellectually engaged - the children are curious, working things out, forming theories and testing them.
