The Establishment of Functional Analysis, an article by Garrett Birkhoff and Erwin Kreyszig on the history of the subject. (Garrett Birkhoff was a mathematician known for his work on lattice theory. He was the son of George David Birkhoff who is the Birkhoff of the Birkhoff Ergodic Theorem.)
