The Department of Computer science and Engineering (CSE) was established in the year 1984 to meet the needs of the emerging IT industry and research. The department started with an initial intake of 60 students in the UG program in CSE and enhanced its intake to 120 in the year 1994. In 1998, the department started a PG program in “Computer Science and Engineering (CSE)” with an intake of 18 students. Presently the department has two PG programs in the branch of Computer Science and Engineering and Computer Network Engineering with an in-take of 30 and 18 students respectively.

Vision

To build a strong learning and research environment in the field of Computer Science and Engineering that promotes innovation towards the betterment of the society.

Mission

  • To produce computer science graduates who, trained in the design and implementation of computational systems through competitive curriculum and research in collaboration with industry and other organizations.
  • To educate students in technology competencies by providing professionally committed faculty and staff.
  • To inculcate strong ethical values, leadership abilities, and research capabilities in the minds of students so as to work towards the progress of thesociety.

Programme Educational Objectives

(PEOs)

A B.E. (Computer Science & Engineering) graduate of M. S. Ramaiah Institute of Technology should, within three to five years of graduation

  1. Pursue a successful career in the field of Computer Science & Engineering or a related field utilizing his/her education and contribute to the profession as an excellent employee, or as an entrepreneur
  2. Be aware of the developments in the field of Computer Science & Engineering, continuously enhance their knowledge informally or by pursuing graduate studies
  3. Be able to work effectively in multidisciplinary environments and be responsible members/leaders of their communities.

Programme Outcomes (POs)

The outcomes of the Bachelor of Engineering in Computer Science & Engineering Programme are as follows:

A B.E. (Computer Science & Engineering) graduate must demonstrate
  • Engineering knowledge: Apply the knowledge of mathematics, science, engineering fundamentals, and an engineering specialization to the solution of complex engineering problems.
  • Problem analysis: Identify, formulate, review research literature, and analyze complex engineering problems reaching substantiated conclusions using first principles of mathematics, natural sciences, and engineering sciences.
  • Design/development of solutions: Design solutions for complex engineering problems and design system components or processes that meet the specified needs with appropriate consideration for the public health and safety, and the cultural, societal, and environmental considerations.
  • Conduct investigations of complex problems: Use research-based knowledge and research methods including design of experiments, analysis and interpretation of data, and synthesis of the information to provide valid conclusions.
  • Modern tool usage: Create, select, and apply appropriate techniques, resources, and modern engineering and IT tools including prediction and modeling to complex engineering activities with an understanding of the limitations.
  • The engineer and society: Apply reasoning informed by the contextual knowledge to assess societal, health, safety, legal and cultural issues and the consequent responsibilities relevant to the professional engineering practice.
  • Environment and sustainability: Understand the impact of the professional engineering solutions in societal and environmental contexts, and demonstrate the knowledge of, and need for sustainable development.
  • Ethics: Apply ethical principles and commit to professional ethics and responsibilities and norms of the engineering practice.
  • Individual and team work: Function effectively as an individual, and as a member or leader in diverse teams, and in multidisciplinary settings.
  • Communication: Communicate effectively on complex engineering activities with the engineering community and with society at large, such as, being able to comprehend and write effective reports and design documentation, make effective presentations, and give and receive clear instructions.
  • Project management and finance: Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the engineering and management principles and apply these to one’s own work, as a member and leader in a team, to manage projects and in multidisciplinary environments.
  • Life-long learning: Recognize the need for, and have the preparation and ability to engage independent and life-long learning in the broadest context of technological change.
Program Specific Outcomes (PSOs):
  • Understand the principles, architecture and organization of computers, embedded systems and computer networks.
  • Apply mathematical foundations, algorithmic principles, and computer science theory in the modelling and design of computer-based systems that include both hardware and software.
  • Apply software design and development practices to develop software applications in emerging areas such as IoT, Data Analytics, Social Networks, Cloud and High Performance Computing.
