Trees can be identified by several of their features such as shape, leaves or bark.
Use the tutorial link to practice identifying a tree using observable features. Click on the word tutorial in this sentence to go to the site. Try several different mystery trees. You may wish to work with a partner.
Now that you have had some practice with tree identification, can you identify your tree outside? Use your descriptions and observations in your science notebook, along with the tree identification site from The Arbor Day Society to find out.
Choose three different kinds of leaves from outside. Tape them in your notebook, leaving lots of space around each leaf to write your observations.
Observe each leaf closely and describe its properties in your notebook. (Observation means looking closely at color, size, shape, texture and appearance.)
Use the site in part two to identify at least one of your leaves.
