Speak Out Competition for Greely High School Students

posted Mar 6, 2015, 6:26 AM by Dawna Green   [ updated Mar 6, 2015, 6:27 AM ]

The Cumberland / North Yarmouth Lions Club is hosting a local Speak Out competition on March 23rd.  The goal is to provide high school students with an opportunity to think about important issues facing them & their community.  Speaker contestants will prepare a 5-minute speech on an important issue facing them, our community, the State, or the Nation. Upon completion, speakers will be asked one question each by two questioners.  Speeches are scored by three judges based on content, presentation, and adhering to time limits. The local winner will be sent to compete in the district Speak Out competition. This is a great opportunity for students to practice their public speaking, win cash prizes, and recognition.

Please see Mr. Curry or Mr. Livingston, GHS teachers, for details and visit  http://www.cnylions.org/speak-out-contest for contest rules.

Geometry CP classes will begin the Flipped Classroom experience next week!
Dear Parents/Guardians,

All this week students have been discussing how to actively view the Flipped Classroom video lessons. It's not the same as watching videos on Netflix, Hulu, etc. for entertainment purposes!
Please help students to be F.I.T. with their T.E.C.H.:

FROM MR. McKEONE

Greetings Parents and Guardians,

I hope you all had a wonderful holiday season. I enjoyed spending time with family and friends. It’s hard to believe that the second semester is already under way! Our students and teachers have been working hard and I have enjoyed seeing our winter athletes in action.

As we move through the second semester, our teachers will continue their work on our conversion to a proficiency-based system. In December, each discipline completed their initial review and adoption of the standards that our students will be expected to master in order to earn a Greely diploma. In the coming months, we will continue to work on the review and revision of our instructional strategies.

On February 11th, during an extended advisory period, our students will be taking the Maine Integrated Youth Health Survey (MIYHS). The MIYHS is an optional and anonymous survey administered to students in grades 9-12. In 2013, 78% of Greely High School students participated. This survey provides our school district with valuable information; vital to our school community as we continue to strive for improvements in student health and well-being. School districts from throughout Maine have the option to participate in the MIYHS every other year. This is a good reminder for all of us to help our children make positive choices about drugs and alcohol.

Please see the list below of recent accomplishments to celebrate at Greely.

  • The Greely High School Unified Basketball Team is entering their first season of athletic competition. Thanks to David Shapiro, Coach Albert McCormick and fans for helping our team of Special Needs and Regular Ed students. It has been fun to watch the team work together and enjoy the spirit of competition.

  • Congratulations to Katherine Leggatt-Barr who was named the Gatorade Maine Girls Cross Country Runner of the Year!

  • Over 20 schools attended the Vex Robotics competition on January 10th in the Middle School gymnasium. Thanks to GHS Science teacher Bob O’Neil for organizing this event.

  • Take a look at all of the award winning GHS musicians listed below.

  • Congratulations to our athletes who participated in the State of Maine Winter Special Olympics at Sugarloaf last weekend.

  • Under the leadership of Social Studies teacher Jason Curry, twenty-nine students were inducted into the Greely High School National Honor Society on January 29th. Congratulations to all!

Enjoy the winter months. I’m looking forward to an outstanding second half of the school year. I appreciate all of the support that our wonderful community provides to its schools. Thanks for all that you do for our kids.

Sincerely,

Dan McKeone
