Vmps Computrainer Studio

Vmps' state of the art, eight station Computrainer studio is used for group training sessions and performance testing. Computrainer offers the most realistic indoor cycling experience available, and most riders who regularly train on a Computrainer report significant gains in cycling power and overall fitness.

Our Computrainer studio has two 50" plasma televisions: one displays training data (watts, average speed, etc); the other presents real videos of famous cycling and triathlon courses to offer a visual experience that matches the terrain presented by the Computrainer, or the second screen broadcasts footage from world class triathlons and cycling events.

Racermate’s Computrainer is an electronic load generator that is fixed to a rear wheel bicycle training stand.  The load generator is connected to a hand unit which may be used to control the load generator directly, and it also is connected to a desktop computer, which offers more advanced opportunities for control.  After mounting your bike on a Computrainer, you will be able to:

  • Ride realistic 3D course simulations, complete with varying terrain
  • Compete with other riders in Computrainer's virtual environments
  • Optimize your cadence
  • Determine critical power output levels

Most importantly you can leverage Computrainer’s precision to obtain accurate testing results useful for power and/or heart rate based training.  For more information on Computrainer, visit:

Vmps can develop custom Computrainer 3D and ergometer programs tailored for your individual training plan.

What Do I Need to Bring to the Vmps Computrainer Studio?
  • Your road or triathlon bike (a smooth rear tire is encouraged!)
  • Appropriate workout clothing and bicycle shoes
  • A towel (you will sweat a lot!)
  • Your preferred form of hydration
  • A heart rate monitor is strongly encouraged
  • A cycling computer with cadence is optional, though useful
  • A trainer-friendly rear skewer

Ultra-lightweight rear wheel skewers don't work too well with bicycle trainers of any sort, as they don't offer adequate surface to clamp the bike securely.

Here's an example of a trainer-friendly skewer.  Both Campagnolo and Shimano offer these as standard, and you can pick-up an imitation copy for $15.00 at Vmps:

Notice that this skewer has a rounded profile that would clamp well in a trainer.

The following example is representative of many ultra-lightweight skewers.  Note how this type of design offers little area for support in most bicycle trainers:

An additional problem with lightweight skewer designs is that they don't hold the rear wheel securely in the frame when riding on the road, either!

Ask about our valet service. Store your bike at Vmps; we set it up for your Computrainer classes.

Vmps Computrainer Race League

The Vmps Computrainer Race League is open to anyone who wishes to participate.  The race league is based on four different courses that vary in length and difficulty. All races are calibrated for a rider's weight and gender, so everyone has an equal opportunity to compete.  At the end of the series, awards are given to the overall female and male riders.

Computrainer Team Time Trial

Structured Group Training Sessions

Vmps offers regularly scheduled group training sessions during the week and on weekends.  Weekday sessions are based on Vmps' periodization model, which enables riders to realize significant performance gains in a time efficient format. Weekday sessions run sixty minutes in length and generally focus on different forms of interval efforts, depending upon the season.  Weekend sessions run sixty or ninety minutes in length and generally are structured around more sustained endurance efforts.

Because all Vmps group training sessions are normalized according to your specific performance and fitness profile, riders of different abilities can ride at the same time, without concern of getting dropped.  Group ride participants are encouraged to schedule a power and threshold testing session in order to take full advantage of Computrainer's options.

MultiRider System Rental for Team Rides and Workouts

Triathlon and cycling teams, and groups of riding buddies can schedule the Vmps Computrainer Studio for group events in one hour blocks of time.  Vmps coaches will work with teams to design studio sessions to meet specific goals and needs. Rental of the eight rider Computrainer system at Vmps is $150 for the first hour, $100 for each subsequent hour. Having a Vmps cycling coach ride with the group providing coaching and instruction is an additional $50 per hour. Contact Vmps at or 508-612-3000 to schedule your group.

Power and Threshold Testing

Computrainer sets the standard for indoor cycling.  Accurate to +/- 2%, Computrainer provides accurate and repeatable data that can be used to establish critical power zones and  identify lactate threshold.  Vmps offers power and threshold testing on Friday evenings, weekends, and by appointment.  Testing sessions run approximately sixty minutes in length.

Cadence Assessment and Optimization

Computrainer not only provides an accurate measurement of power--it also provides detailed information on cadence and pedal stroke.  With Computrainer, riders can identify such variables as optimal cadence for specific types of riding (time trial versus road, for instance),  modifications to the pedal stroke to increase peak power or overall efficiency, and the impact of position adjustment on cadence and power.  Cadence Assessment and Optimization sessions are available by appointment and run approximately sixty minutes in length.

Bike Fitting

In order to avoid injury and to realize performance goals, it is critical that you are fitted appropriately to your bike.  Most bike fitting services focus exclusively on the rider's position on the bike; Vmps not only helps you establish a sound position on your bike, we also use Computrainer to help you assess the impact that positional adjustments might have on your overall production of power and on the efficacy of your pedal stroke.  Bike fitting sessions are scheduled by appointment only and run approximately ninety minutes to two hours in length.
