"Aquel No Era Yo" ("That Wasn't Me"), directed by Spanish filmmaker Esteban Crespo, tells a story of a horrifying incident that begins at a checkpoint in an unspecified, war-torn African country. Two doctors are stopped by child soldiers on a dirt road, and from there the short escalates into moments of excruciating violence.

The French-language "Avant Que De Tout Perdre (Just Before Losing Everything)," directed by Xavier Legrand, chronicles a woman who takes her two children out of school for reasons that don't become clear until later in the film.

"Helium," directed by Anders Walter, is an emotional fantasy, the story of a hospital janitor who provides solace to a terminally ill boy by telling him stories of a magical land called Helium. Danish producer Kim Magnusson has been nominated in the category five times and won once, and his production company (and his father Tivi) was behind the 2009 winner, "The New Tenants."

"Pitääkö Mun Kaikki Hoitaa? (Do I Have To Take Care of Everything?)" directed bySelma Vilhunen, is a Finnish comedy short that follows a wildly disorganized, mishap-prone family of four as they frantically get ready for a wedding and face one calamity after another.

"The Voorman Problem," directed by Mark Gill, is a British film that features Martin Freeman of "The Hobbit." He plays a psychiatrist summoned to a prison to examine Voorman, an inmate who has convinced his fellow prisoners that he is a god - and the interview turns problematic when Voorman turns out to have unusual powers of persuasion.

The 86th Annual Academy Awards will be handed out in a live telecast ceremony held at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood on Sunday, March 2nd.
