At MMS, teachers will routinely craft lessons that blend subjects, reflecting how interwoven they truly are. The teaching and learning experience is keenly attuned to the demands of today’s world, not the industrial world that existed a hundred years ago when the American school model came into being.
MMS will import both the Team Teaching and Block Schedule components of the High Tech Middle School model. Teachers only have 56 students total in their core classes at full enrollment, as opposed to an average of 170 students common for traditional school teachers. Obviously, it is more attainable to get to know 56 students than 170.
Additionally, this scheduling allows teachers to build common group norms and culture across smaller groups, for a better sense of school body cohesion and common values.
Team teaching allows core teachers to design projects that are integrated across their subjects. This affords students to experience the interconnectedness of the subjects they are learning, and, the relevance of their education, with a more meaningful and authentic academic career than if they worked in subject and peer isolation.
Team teaching usually involves block scheduling which allows teachers to see their students for up to two hours a day. This presents teachers with the opportunity to know their students so they can be challenged appropriately and encouraged to do their best.
The team structure can also make students feel as if they are in a smaller environment, easing students into the transition of middle school. Blocked time with fellow students, along with the collaboration of project work, also facilitates more meaningful peer relationships. Finally, this type of school organization empowers teachers and grants them the opportunity for more purposeful leadership.
