Zone After School Program

The primary purpose of the Zone After School Program is to provide a safe and fun learning environment for students grades K-6 during after school hours at Morris Area Elementary.  While at Zone, students will enjoy a healthy snack, move their bodies, explore creativity, and expand their knowledge through a structured, yet flexible, daily schedule.

With guidance from the Zone coordinator, classroom teachers, and parents, the Zone staff provides a relaxed learning environment where students are able to work on their homework, but also work on other targeted concepts as needed.  Additional academic, recreational, and enrichment activities are provided for students in case they have no homework.  All activities provided will be age/skill level appropriate.

Enrollment

Your child must be registered for Zone with money on their Zone account before they can start attending.  Three things are needed:

        1)  Student Information Form

        2)  Parent Information Handbook

        3)  Money on Zone account

Information on the Student Information enrollment form includes:  identification data, person(s) authorized to pick up your child, medical information, emergency information, and signatures from both a parent/guardian and the student.  Permission and release information is also included.  The Parent Information Handbook has important Zone information - essentially the Zone how-to guide.

Pricing

$4.00 a Day

Zone's daily charge is to cover snacks and extracurricular activities.  Money must be placed on your family's Zone account in advance and may be done at the Morris Area Community Education office.  Each time your child attends Zone and signs in, the $4.00 daily charge is deducted from their Zone account.  It is your responsibility to keep your balance positive and up to date.  You may pay for individual days, or in a larger package.  There is a choice of a $20.00 package (5 punches), a $40 package (10 punches), or a $200 package (50 punches).  Punches may also be purchased in increments of $4.00 in any amount you choose.

Scholarships and reduced fees are available for qualified families.

Zone Staff

The Zone staff is made up of 20 University of Minnesota Morris college students.  Each staff member brings a unique set of talents, qualities, and backgrounds, but all of them have the same strong passion for working with children.  In cooperation with the Zone Coordinator, the Zone staff work directly with the students each day.  They are excellent role models, active learners, and future teachers.

Zone Days

Zone is in session Monday through Friday, 3:00 – 5:00 p.m. during the school year.  Zone is not in session during the planned school holidays, no school days, or University of Minnesota Morris breaks.  In the event of school closing, Zone will not be held on weather-related early dismissal days or when school is canceled.  Please follow Morris Area Community Education on Facebook and Twitter, and tune into KMRS/KKOK for Zone updates.

TREC

Tutoring - Reading - Empowering - Children

The TREC program was forged in 1997 from a grant awarded to the University of Minnesota Morris from the  Minnesota Campus Compact. TREC was built on the foundations of a smaller volunteer program previously operated by Morris Area Community Education, and TREC has been a part of the Zone After School Program since 2008.
