3rd Grade Outreach Project

posted May 12, 2017, 12:47 PM by Kelly Orr

LES 3rd graders visited the Friends of Animals Shelter here in Lynchburg recently.  Students participated in an outreach project to help make the animals more comfortable with people to prepare them for adoption. The children read books to the animals. This project not only helped the animals, but the animals helped our students too. Our 3rd graders were able to practice reading aloud to an audience that could bark, but not speak. This provided a fun-loving reading experience for our students in which they could read with confidence.  We could have not done this without the help of Laura Swinford at the animal shelter!

News in 3rd Grade

Mrs. Awalt's classes ( with the help of Mrs. Crook) have been participating in Interactive Read Alouds. During December, we did a read aloud with The Hat and The Mitten by Jan Brett. Macy Sanders, on her own time, wrote to the author telling her about our book study and how much she was enjoying her style of writing and illustrations. With great surprise, Jan Brett responded to her with a personalized letter and then she sent a class packet of Jan Brett activities and guides to her books! Looking back at Read Across America Week, we can honestly relate to the phrase, "Oh the places You'll Go!" What a wonderful experience this was and what a friend we now have in Jan Brett!
