What is a Chromebook?

You can think of a Chromebook as an Internet-dependent laptop that starts up super fast and lasts all-day on a single charge. When you turn on the Chromebook you’ll notice that everything starts with the Google Chrome Internet browser.  View the Chromebook Laptop Comparison guide to learn how the Chromebook and a laptop are similar.

What can I do with a Chromebook?

Chromebooks use web-based Apps and Extensions to create documents and access information through the Chrome web browser.  For keeping organized and staying in touch with your colleagues MPS has adopted Gmail, Calendar, Contacts, and Hangouts.  For word processing, spreadsheets, and presentations MPS uses Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides.  All of these creations are stored within Google Drive, an unlimited cloud-based storage solution.

How does the Chromebook connect to the Internet?

Chromebooks connect to the Internet over WiFi, which is why Monroe has been investing heavily in wireless networks in classrooms and in the fiber connections between schools.  For Chromebooks to work well, they require fast Internet.   There are rare times during the school year when our WIFI network may be down (often weather-related). Fortunately, there are workarounds for plenty of routine tasks. You can still compose and read emails with Gmail Offline and word process with Google Drive Offline. The offline apps will automatically sync and save when your computer has an Internet connection.

Can I print from a Chromebook?

Yes, and no.  Chromebooks can print to newer printers connected to Google Cloud Print.  Due to the age of many of MPS's printers, the feature is not widely available.  But, you can print from a Windows computer; simply access your Google Drive, open your document and select Print.
