Reading Strategies

Students learn to read in Kindergarten. Once they have learned their letter sounds, and their sight words, they can put what they have learned into practice by reading. We teach students strategies to help them decode the words they are reading. Here are the first six strategies we teach new readers.
  •  Point to the words as you read
  •  Look at the picture to find clues
  •  Read the sight words that you know
  •  Use the letters sounds to sound out the words
  •  Find chunks of words that you know in the words
  •  Re- read the sentence to make sense.
