English Study Skills

Dear Parent(s)/Guardian:

Welcome to English Study Skills!

It is an honor and a privilege to have your son/daughter within my classroom this year. As you know success in high school requires strong communication and active participation between home, school, and students.  One way I communicate with students is through Google Classroom. By utilizing Google Classroom students can locate important information that will aid in student learning. Students are encouraged to "share" their documents with me so I may provide effective feedback to them to help close the gap and improve academic performances.

This year, I am excited to announce, I have created a community of independent readers by designing an independent reading unit for them.  Students choose a novel from either our classroom library, school library, or from home to read for 10 minutes at the start of each class.  On the completion of the novel, students are required to write a book review and complete one project-based assignment to be shared aloud in class. The purpose of the independent reading unit is to help students find pleasure in reading.  As you know, students who read for pleasure become better readers, score higher on achievement test, and improve in academics overall.

In addition to the independent reading unit, students will participate in a "Reader's Notebook" activities to strengthen their literacy skills. They will read two novels in class, write a descriptive/narrative essay, take part in class debates, write a persuasive essay, analyze famous speeches, and design a piece of literature art to increase their English Language Arts skills.

English Study Skills is a  "Strengths-Based Approach" while creating a "Brain-Friendly" classroom.

Lastly, I want you to know my door is always opened for you. No one knows a child better than the parent. You are the first teacher in their lives. Please feel free to reach out to me anytime at lcamarda@mohawkschools.org
