Getting to Know Mrs. Rivera

Tessa M. Rivera

Reading Interventionist, Gratz Brown Elementary

I am a graduate of Moberly Senior High School.  I attended Moberly Public Schools from Kindergarten through twelfth grade.  Go Spartans!  I earned my Bachelor and Master degree from Columbia College.  I also have my Reading Specialist certificate.  I have been trained in Reading Recovery and Fundations.  I began my teaching experience in Middle Grove as a fourth and fifth grade teacher where I taught for two years.  I also taught first and second grade in Moberly for three years before becoming a Reading Interventionist in 2002.

As a Reading teacher, my goal is for every student to be able to read in order to learn and gain information.  I also want every child to enjoy reading.  I will give my students reading strategies to enable them to become fluent, expressive, confident readers in the classroom and in the real world.  I will give my students strategies to comprehend information in their textbooks, as well as to gain information from any material they read.  I will provide a safe, non-threatening classroom with high expectations of all students.  I will strive to know each of my students as individuals and meet them where they are in their learning.

I believe that parents play a very important role in their child’s education and are a vital member of their child’s educational team.  Please keep open lines of communication with all teachers working with your child. Please always encourage your child to be responsible, respectful and safe.  Time spent reading is highly correlated with comprehension, so give your child a book or magazine and encourage them to read more!

The more you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go.
