Beginning language programs introduce students to new vocabulary that they use in speaking, writing, reading and listening. Through small-group activities, skits, projects, daily in-class activities, and the study of the culture and geography of the country, students begin to develop an understanding of world language and culture.
Latin 1A explores the language and world of the Romans through the Cambridge Latin Course. Unit I takes us into the life of Lucius Caecilius Iucundus, an actual resident of Pompeii. Through Latin stories about Caecilius and his family, students learn about Roman Baths, the theater, gladiatorial contests, daily life, education and more. The end of the year brings us to the cataclysmic eruption of Vesuvius in 79 A.D. and students must continue to Latin 1B to find out who survives.
