Solar Eclipse Permission Slips

posted Aug 17, 2017, 8:19 AM by David Leonard

Permission slips are going home today. The upcoming solar eclipse is a great opportunity to learn about science.
Viewing the clips without proper glassware can cause permanent damage to your eyes. Please have a very serious conversation with your children about this.

We have glasses that our students can use, but we will only allow students to participate in viewing the eclipse with these glasses if we have your permission. Please sign and return these permission slips tomorrow so that we can have your child participate on Monday morning.

Thank you!

Peanut Allergy, Site Council & Back to School Night

posted Aug 15, 2017, 7:46 AM by David Leonard

Dear Families,
We're so excited that our school year is off to such a great start. Our first day went extremely well, and our students did a great job! Our Back to School Parent Information Night will be held Thursday, August 31st from 6 to 7 pm. Each teacher will have two 30 minute presentations (6 & 6:30 pm) so parents can visit at least two classrooms that evening.
August 30th & 31st are also minimum days. On these days, teachers attend professional development workshops, and collaborate with their grade level peers at other school sites. Dismissal time is 1:20 on Minimum Days, and bus routes arrive two hours earlier than normal.
We have our annual Swim Days scheduled for September.
Mrs. Rodgers & Mr. Morita's classes will go on 9/6/17. Ms. Millar's TK/K and Ms. Beck's 1st Grade will go on 9/7/17. Mrs. Lutes 2/3 & Mr. Weiss' 3rd grade will go on 9/8/17. We're also going to do a walking field trip that morning to Hardester's Market as a part of our Site Safety Plan.
We're looking for parent/guardian Site Council members for the 2017-18 school year. Site Council looks at student achievement data, our LCAP (Local Control Area Plan), and parent/student survey data to make decisions for our plan for student success. We need a minimum of five parent members. Meetings take place on Friday morning at 8 am. If you're interested or know someone who is, please contact me at

Lastly, I wanted to inform/remind families that we have a student with a severe peanut allergy.  Some families new to our school may not know this.  Here's some information from our website.

Peanut Allergy

Our school has students with peanut & melon allergies. Let's clarify a few things regarding these allergies.

  • Having an allergy is not a choice.
  • This is a life threatening condition.
  • Exposure to oils from peanut protein, dust from food that contains peanuts, or ingestion of something that contains peanuts can initiate anaphylaxis. Likewise contact with melons, or melon juice can create a reaction.
  • The type of anaphylaxis this child has experienced has been a drop in blood pressure resulting in losing consciousness.  This is a rare and serious reaction because it means that their heart is slowing and will just stop if they aren't treated.
  • This student is highly aware that they need to be vigilant about the food they handle and eat, and takes every precaution to protect themself from having a reaction.
How can you help?
  1. It is imperative that any foods containing peanuts should stay at home. Please provide snacks & lunches that don't contain peanuts.
  2. If your child had something containing peanuts for breakfast, check their clothing for any smears of the peanut product.
  3. Have your child wash with soap and water (hand sanitizer doesn't remove the protein oils).
  4. Have your child brush their teeth, or rinse their mouth with water.
  5. Remind your child that we do not share food with other students at Cobb School for safety reasons.
  6. If you're looking for a list of alternate snack foods, you can find it hereSunbutter and some almond butters are alternatives for children who absolutely won't eat anything but peanut butter. We know how finicky children can be about food.
We'll be checking snacks daily in this child's classroom to be sure they are safe. If for some reason a food containing peanuts shows up at school, we'll replace it with an alternate for your child and send it home with a note reminding you about the need to keep foods peanut free. Again, this is a life threatening allergy. Thank you for helping keeping our students safe!

Fidget Spinners

posted May 19, 2017, 3:00 PM by David Leonard

Please leave fidget spinners home. They are toys, and like other toys, they get lost, broken and stolen. The last thing we want is for your child's toys to end up that way. Thanks for your help in this matter.
