I would like to thank Mrs. Billie June Hollifield for getting the pictures and personal letters that make up Claude's page. Claude was not included in the Voices of the Valley book list of Mitchell County men killed in WWII as he didn't show up in the govt. list or Tri-County newspapers as being from here. He and his wife lived in Catawba County (where Sue was a school teacher) at the time of his enlistment at the age of 32 which makes him older than most enlistees. Catawba County claims him on their casualty list but Claude is a Mitchell Countian. Claude was inadvertently left out of the book and as I helped put the list together, I apologize for my error. People who knew better told me about him and I am honored to recognize him here.
