Metter Intermediate School


MIS teacher Becky Knight accepts a check from the Candler County Foundation.  For the 3rd year in a row MIS will be participating in the district Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl in Greensboro, GA in February.

Purpose and/or mission:
•        To meet acceleration goals of the Candler County system charter.
•        Georgia Association of Educators (GAE) and  Georgia Library Media Association(GLMA) sponsor the   annual state  Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl.
•        To participate in the Georgia Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl students must read the 2014-2015 Georgia Children’s Book Award Nominees.  The book list is comprised of titles on the Georgia Book Awards Nominees list and titles on the Georgia Peach Teen Book Award Nominees list.
•        Each school team will consist of five players and five alternates. The MIS student team will compete to test their knowledge of the selected books required by the Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl. 
 


Goals and objectives:
•        Provides an avenue to reward the academic strength of reading.
•        Encourage independent reading for pleasure.
•        To improve comprehension skills.
•        To accelerate student learning and increase Milestones and Lexile scores.
•        To increase the number of students meeting the Reading Milestones.
•        To increase the number of students exceeding the ELA Milestones.
•        To foster strong support for the media center which is the key to successful reading programs in the schools.
•        To encourage reading through friendly team competition.

Jerri O'Brien and Stephanie Jeffers are also coaches for the MIS Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl Team.

MIS participates in regional Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl in Greensboro, GA, Sat. The MIS student team will compete to test their knowledge of the selected books required by the Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl. 53 4th and 5th grade students with high CRCT scores in reading and ELA and high Lexile scores on the spring 2013 CRCT. Out of these students 10 have earned the privilege of being a part of the MIS Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl Team on Feb. 7, 2015, at district competition in Greensboro, GA.
