Watch Folder

One of the easiest ways to get new articles into your library is by using the Watch Folder.

What is a Watch Folder? It is nothing more than one (or more) folder(s) that you designate as being under surveillance by Mendeley Desktop. Any time a new article is added to the watched folder, Mendeley will automatically import it and perform the regular document detail extraction.

To set up the folders to be "watched" by Mendeley Desktop, simply do the following:
  1. Go to File > Preferences.
  2. Select the Watched Folders tab.
  3. Select the folder(s) you would like Mendeley Desktop to keep an eye on.
  4. Click OK.
Now, any PDF you drop in the folder(s) you selected will automatically be imported into Mendeley, no extra clicks required.

NOTE: Due to the fact that watch folders are under constant monitoring by Mendeley Desktop, it is recommended that you do not select a folder that is already being synchronized and monitored by other services such as Dropbox, SkyDrive, Google Drive, etc. This can lead to conflicts and possible loss of data.
