8th grade English, Creative Writing, and 7th grade Social Studies
I have been teaching in Memphis Community Schools for thirteen years, five of those at the high school and now I am beginning my ninth year at the junior high. Mostly I have taught all English classes, but I am certified to teach History, so I have also taught 7th grade History, 9th grade World History as well as an occasional Current Events or World Issues course.
Anyone who knows me, knows that I have a not so secret love and passion for books. I have always enjoyed reading, and I love sharing that passion with my students. You want to get me started on a long and animated conversation? Get me talking about books!
On a more personal note, my favorite things in life happen to be: travel, the beach (better yet, reading on the beach), my family, Diet Coke (ask my students), & sarcasm. I have a quirky sense of humor and LOVE a good pun. Put those two together and it will make sense to you that while I enjoy Shakespeare's wit, I also appreciate and delight in movies such as Monty Python & the Holy Grail, Spinal Tap and Napoleon Dynamite. I have an eclectic and sometimes contradictory personality. I SO love romantic novels such as Wuthering Heights, Gone With the Wind, and Jane Eyre; however, I often am seen as a cynical realist. Considering most of those books do not have happy endings, maybe I am not as complex as I thought!
I wouldn't say that History is my second love. I feel that it is necessary to know and understand the historical time period in which a novel was written or takes place. I often include a historical background lesson before teaching any novel. I am fascinated by History and enjoy reading Non-Fiction also, so I have one Fiction and one Non-Fiction book going at all times in my house.
