X-Country at Juneau

Payenna, a senior from Nome, ran 17:02 at the Juneau Invitational Sept. 18 to finish in third place. Payenna came home behind two Juneau-Douglas runners, but beat Sitka High's Niko Friedman, who finished in 17:11. It was the first time in 2010 that Payenna beat Friedman, his chief rival from Sitka High. At the 3A state meet in 2009, Payenna was third in 16:53, while Friedman was fourth in 16:59. The pair entered the 2010 season as the top returning 3A runners in Alaska.

 

As a team, the MEHS Braves were sixth overall and fifth among 3A teams with 137 points. Juneau (23), SItka (74), Haines (103), Thunder Mountain (114) and Wrangell (135) finished ahead of the Braves.

 

Jesse Rogers, a senior from Dillingham, also cracked the top 10 for Edgecumbe at the Juneau race, taking 8th in a time of 17:59.

 

The top finisher for MEHS Lady Braves in Juneau was Scarlett Beaver, who took 20th place in 23:45. Deirdre Creed was 22nd in a time of 23:56.  The Lady Braves finished sixth as a team and fourth among the 3A schools at the race with 181 points. Juneau (32), Sitka (59), Craig (74), Ketchikan (143) and Haines (144) finished ahead of Mt. Edgecumbe
