The Mt. Edgecumbe Braves fell to Sitka High in the opening dual match of the 2010 season Oct. 12.

Sitka won eight bouts in the match, including seven by pin, to take a 45-28 victory.

Asked what his team has to work on, MEHS coach Mike Kimber said: “Everything.”

“It might just have been a  good wake-up call,” he said. “They were sitting pretty high on themselves.”

Kimber's 2010 squad is talented with two returning state champions and a total of nine returning state qualifiers on the roster. But the coach said recently he needs leaders to step up and guide the team if the Braves are going to be successful in 2010. The Braves won the Region V 3A title in 2009 and finished seventh at the state tournament.

Kimber said he saw some positives during the loss to Sitka, but he mostly credited the Wolves.

“Sitka came out hungrier than we were," Kimber said. "They deserve the win. I’m happy for them, that was good wrestling.”

MEHS’s Carl Crockett, a sophomore from Brevig Mission, opened the match for MEHS with a 9-7 win at 160 pounds. The Braves led 3-0, but fell behind 12-3. MEHS then rallied to take a 21-12 lead on the strength of forfeits at 103 and 215. Jaylin Prince, a junior from Kotlik who won a state title at 285 in 2009, added a pin to help the Braves.

Sitka roared back to take a 30-21 lead and the next win for the Braves came at 130, where senior Jesse Rogers (Dillingham) beat Will Patrick 9-3. Rogers won the state championship last year at 119 pounds, while Patrick was third at 125 for Sitka. Rogers win put the score at 30-24, but Sitka won the next three matches to take a 45-24 lead. Senior Matt Rogers (Dillingham) sent Edgecumbe home on a high note winning the final bout of the night 10-1 at 152 pounds.

The final score was 45-28 with Sitka on top.
