3A State Wrestling Meet 2010-11

        December 10-11 was the 1a-2a-3a high school state championship wrestling tournament hosted by Nikiski. The tournament went well for the Braves. MEHS qualified eight wrestlers and placed five. Adam Iypana from Little Diomede at 215lbs went 4-2 placing 5th and Carl Crockett at 160lbs took 6th going 3-3. The Braves racked up three finalists. Jesse Rogers 125lbs from Dillingham won his second state title defeating rival Sitka’s Will Patrick for the fifth time and ended his season record 24-0. Rogers beat Patrick five times this season 9-3, 3-1, 3-1 SV1, 4-3 region finals, and 2-1 SV2 at the state finals. Jesse had a close 7-6 semi over Kotzebue’s Landon Eck. He also had to ride out Patrick for 30 seconds in the 2nd overtime to win 2-1. Jesse also finished his career as a 4x region champ and 4x state placer going 3, 2, 1, 1 at state.  Mathew Rogers (Jesse’s twin brother) won his old nemesis and training partner from Dillingham, Reed Tennyson 11-5. Mathew finished his season 38-0 and was voted 2010-11 state tournaments’s most Outstanding Wrestler. Mathew controlled the pace of the match, kept wrestling the whole six minutes, wrestled smart and edged last year’s state champ to win OW. Mathew is also a 4x state placer with 5th, 6th, 6th, 1st place finishes at state.  Second time state champion Jaylin Prince from Kotlik won the heavyweight finals 5-1 over Petersburg’s Jacob Craig.  Jaylin wrestled smart and went 4-0 to defend his heavyweight title. Jaylin is on his way to becoming a 3x state champion and easily controlled the action. Edgecumbe overall finished 7th as a team with 106 points falling behind 6th place Craig with 109 points and 5th place Sitka 112.5 points.  (below are finalist, podium, & OW photos)
