It was that time of the year again, Sitka Youth Court swore in Gavin Sam (Nulato), Jae Lee (Dillingham), Mildred Nanouk (Unalakleet), Willie Drake (Anchorage), Frankie Demantle (Anchorage), Sabrina Michael (Kwethluk), and Victor Jordan (Manokotak) on Tuesday, October 4, 2011. First, they had to go through two days of extensive training, followed by a written exam. If passed, they then practice a mock case sentencing for the swearing in ceremony. From then on, they meet once a month with the returning youth court members that consist of fellow Mt. Edgecumbe, Sitka High, and Blatchley Middle School students. Not only does SYC benefits its members with community work service hours and an improved résumé, but it also helps youth in need of its services, and the community at large.
From left to rights stands Karissa Hauck (Sitka, the SYC Advisor), Gavin Sam (Nulato), Sabrina Michael (Kwethluk), Jae Lee (Dillingham), Mildred Nanouk (Unalakleet), Victor Jordan (Manokotak), and Willie Drake (Anchorage).
