Three Mt. Edgecumbe High wrestlers and two Sitka High wrestlers came away with first-place finishes this past weekend at the Mt. Edgecumbe tournament.
Ten teams from around Southeast took part in the tourney in the Braves’ home arena.
Moses Jackson, Michael Matthew and Gusty Akelkok of Mt. Edgecumbe came out on top in their divisions. Jackson won the 98-106 pounds weight class over fellow Brave Deirdre Creed.
“Deirdre had a great weekend,” Mike Kimber, head coach of the Braves, said. “She’s been very disciplined this season to stay at her weight class and in her training.”

Matthew edged out Sitka High’s Elliott Anderson for first in the 182-195 division of the double elimination tournament. Sitka coach William Patrick said  Matthew and Anderson should be a fun match to watch all season long and that Anderson has looked good after an injury last season.
“Elliott Anderson really stood out to me. He is looking really awesome coming back from his injury,” Patrick said.
Kimber said he was especially impressed by the Anderson-Matthew match-up because of the weight difference between the two.
“Michael is giving up nearly 20 pounds to Elliott Anderson right now so that makes for a pretty tough matchup early in the season,” Kimber said.
Akelkok won the 220-285 pound weight division over Metlakatla’s Tristan Alexander. Chatham Conner and Lucky Miguel finished third and fourth, respectively.
“Gusty (Akelkok) is wrestling bigger, stronger guys and when you do that you have to wrestle mistake free,” Kimber said.
Darin Davis of Sitka won the 113- pound weight class over Mt. Edgecumbe’s Trevor Creed. Davis is one of the best-conditioned Wolves at this point of the season having competed in cross country in the fall, said Patrick.
“Darin Davis looked great. He’s in good shape having come in from running cross country and he’s off to a really good start this season,” Patrick said.
Mitchell Boord was Sitka’s other top finisher. Patrick said  it’s hard to tell that Boord took a week off at the beginning of the season to rest up after football.
“Mitchell has looked great once again. He sat out the first week to heal up from football but he looks dominant once again and he’ll certainly be up there at the end of the season,” Patrick said.
Both Kimber and Patrick said Wrangell is the likely team to beat in Southeast this year. Wrangell won two weight classes
this weekend and finished in the top two of five different divisions. Wrangell,  Thorne Bay, Skagway, Petersburg, Craig, Metlakatla, Hoonah and Pelican joined Sitka and Mt. Edgecumbe at the tournament.
Next week Sitka and Edgecumbe will head to the ACS tournament in Anchorage, which Patrick said will be a better test of where the wrestlers stand in the state.

“ACS will set the pace for the state,” Patrick said. “It’s a big tournament with lots of top wrestlers and it will give us an opportunity to measure ourselves against some of the best in the state.”
Patrick and Kimber are in the process of adjusting their team to peak at the end of the season.
“It’s early in the season,” Patrick said, “but with that being said, it’s a short season.”
Kimber is especially pressed because Mt. Edgecumbe practices are limited to an hour and 15 minutes.
“Our philosophy for practice has to be a little bit different because of our time constraints,” Kimber said. “We wrestle for our conditioning because we don’t have time to break it up.”
Kimber said the weekend was great for both schools because by working with Sitka High they could have a bigger tournament.
